Aim

Urban spaces are the scenes of urban-life experiences of the citizens; they are formed by the accumulation of diverse cultural layers. Besides the public urban spaces like avenues, streets, public squares there are different types like passages, dead-end streets and courts which can be called as in-between spaces bearing more privacy. The aim is to understand the logic of generation of the urban structure by analyzing the historical layers and the connections of the structure, to realize the spatial identities, and to maintain sustainability.

CHARACTERISTICS

The project aims to make researches, gather data to compare the different formations under different geographies and to make design proposals for the semi-public spaces under the subtitles; the physical spatial evolution in the historical process in different cultures and geographies, their spatial features in urban morphology, under what kind of physical and social influences they developed, what kind of functions they have in urban life and how can these spaces with strong  local or traditional features transform according to the current expactations and needs.

OBJECTIVES

- To develop the ability of multi-dimensional thinking and interdisciplinary comprehension on semi-public spaces such as; passage, courtyards and dead-ends;

- To provide awareness on the subjects of cultural heritage and sustainability;

To accentuate the holistic approach to spatial problems in the design processes;
To gain the ability of realizing the background factors of similar physical spaces in different cultures  and enable them to create the ability of designing through this knowledge.

METHODOLOGY

The workshop has two steps; first is the analysis phase and the second step is the design phase for thinking and finding solutions on the defined problems of the area.

Analysis

The analysis phase includes the observations, site studies and the researches on the documents about the area. Conferences will be given to the participants in order to provide knowledge about the area’s history and current situation. The transformations and the contribution of the semi-public spaces to the urban life, will be analyzed by examining the cartographic and printed documents. Following this analysis phase, the problems/potentials, will be defined about the subject.

Design proposals

In this phase, participants are supposed to offer design solutions supporting the urban life, providing sustainability to the urban pattern and obtain the required transformations in the analyzed public and semi-public spaces.

Location and the Limits of the Study Area

The study area KARAKOY is at the skirts of GALATA constituting the intersection line of the district with the sea. Galata district is a part of BEYOGLU which is one of the biggest counties of Istanbul. Karakoy is at the center of Istanbul Metropolitan City and in the Central Business Area which had the function of trading and seaport during the history  and today. The area is a strategic point because of its geographical location being at the junction of Golden Horn (Halic) and Bosphorus.

The limits of the area which is subject to our study can be defined in two scales. The broader conception area which will be analysed is defined between Tophane Square on the east, Azapkapı on the west, and Galata Tower following the traces of the old city walls on the north and ending with the coastline on the south. The area that design study will cover is a limited area. The limits are defined between Karakoy Square where Eminonu-Karakoy Bridge ends on the west, Tophane Square on the east, Galata Tower and the traces of the old city walls on the north, and the coastline on the south.

Questions of the workshop

The design area can be treated as having three sub-areas;

-  The public and semi-public spaces which are perpendicularly connecting the Galata coast and the   upper parts of Galata (Sishane, Galata Tower, Istiklal Street, Tophane);

-  The public and semi-public spaces those lie parallel to the coastline and topography, which are a part of the city’s main transportation lines;
-   The public and semi-public spaces on the coastline between buildings and the sea that constitute         the relation of the citizen with the sea.

And the questions to be answered by the workshop are;

- What are the physical and social potentials these public and semi-public spaces present?
What kind of criteria is needed to be discussed and developed for those in-between spaces in terms of their contribution to the city’s future life?
 What kind of design approaches can be developed in order to make the district’s unique character continue and to make the deprived spaces more qualified?
